Safety Involvement Teams (SIT) / Unit Safety Involvement Teams (USIT)

In an effort to continue Georgia Gulf’s excellent safety records, the company created an operator-based safety involvement team (SIT) at each of its chemical division manufacturing sites. The overarching goal of the SIT process is to foster employee involvement and ownership of the safety process.

The first SIT was formed in March 1999 following benchmarking sessions with another chemical company which had employed a similar process for about 8 years. Each location’s SIT is comprised of approximately ten (10) employees and addresses only sitewide safety issues. Most of their work involves review of the Health & Safety Manual programs and procedures and auditing performance relative to safety programs and procedures.

Unit Safety Involvement Teams (USITs) were derived from the SIT in 2001. These teams focus on similar issues within individual units at each facility. The USIT for each department is charged to review safety items of a departmental scope with the emphasis being on the participation of all employees and auditing departmental performance for safety programs (again with an emphasis on safe work permit auditing).

The chairpersons of the USITs form the membership of the SIT. The SIT has two members from management ranks that act as resources to the team's efforts.

Since inception of the SIT/USIT process, our facilities have experienced consistent improvement in safety performance measurement data. For data on each site, please visit the Safety Data page.
